Abril Castro Prieto

Biography

Abril Castro Prieto is a curator and cultural practitioner based in Mexico City. Born in Tijuana, a border city whose complexities have deeply shaped her perspective, she works with an awareness of sociopolitical and economic inequalities, as well as the structural tensions that emerge across geographic and identity-based borders. She holds a BA in Language and Literature from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California and an MA in Cultural Management from the Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila.

Her practice is grounded in transfeminist perspectives and sex-gender dissidence, with a focus on archival research and the development of critical public programmes. Through curatorial research, exhibition-making, and collaborative methodologies, she examines the intersections of contemporary art, dissident memory, critical pedagogy, and cultural politics in Latin America. She currently coordinates the Visual Arts Department at the Museo Universitario del Chopo (UNAM).

Previously, she served as Deputy Director of Exhibitions at the Museo de Arte Moderno (2009–2012) and Exhibition Coordinator at Centro Cultural Tijuana / El Cubo (2001–2009). Her practice also includes writing and independent research on contemporary culture, dissidence, and critical thought.
