Silvia Benedetti

Biography

Silvia Benedetti is a Venezuelan art historian, curator, and writer living between Caracas and New York. Her work bridges historical conceptualism and contemporary social practice, reassessing underrepresented artists within broader global art histories. Her research also examines the intersections of craftsmanship, textile traditions, and global modernism—viewing traditional craft not as a static remnant of the past, but as an active strategy for ecological and cultural preservation.

She holds an MA in Art History and an Advanced Certificate in Curatorial Studies from Hunter College, where her research on Venezuelan conceptual artist Claudio Perna was featured in MoMA's post. Since 2020, she has been teaching Art History courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels at the University of Piura in Peru.

Benedetti has held curatorial and research positions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Dia Art Foundation, and The Bronx Museum of the Arts. Her curatorial projects include Dialogues: Tim Rollins, K.O.S., and Glenn Ligon and a collection display at The Bronx Museum featuring works by Vito Acconci, Seydou Keïta, Daniela Rossell, and John Baldessari. In 2010, she co-founded the Venezuelan chapter of Docomomo, an international organization dedicated to preserving Modernist architecture and urban sites.

A recipient of the 2023 Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant administered by Creative Capital, Benedetti has written for The New York Times, Artforum, The Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, and Le Quotidien de l'Art. Her research explores the material and conceptual practices of artists including Gego, Beatriz González, and Franz Erhard Walther. Following her 2024 exhibition of American painter James Howell at the New York Studio School, she has continued her research into textile preservation and the technical expertise of artisanal communities, focusing on master weavers such as Margarita Mora in the Venezuelan Andes.
