Celestino Siane

Biography

Celestino Siane is a Mozambican cultural heritage professional and senior curator at the Matola Raid Memorial Museum. He holds a postgraduate degree in Rural Sociology and Development Management from Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo (2010), a BA in Philosophy Teaching Skills from the Pedagogical University of Maputo (2003), and an Honours bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the Urbaniana University of Rome, awarded through St. Joseph Theological Institute of Cedara, South Africa (1996–1998).

Siane has held senior positions within Mozambique’s cultural heritage sector, including serving as Head of the Department of Monuments and Museums at the National Directorate for Cultural Heritage. Through this role, he developed extensive expertise in heritage management and World Heritage matters. In collaboration with technical teams on the Island of Mozambique, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, he contributed to fundraising initiatives, training programmes, and community-based conservation efforts aimed at strengthening local participation in heritage preservation.

As Senior Curator at the Matola Raid Memorial Museum, Siane oversees collection care, preventive conservation, interpretation, and public engagement. His work includes developing exhibitions, educational programmes, guided tours, and partnerships with local and international institutions to promote knowledge exchange and advance museum practices.

With a longstanding commitment to cultural heritage, museums, art history, and cultural education, Siane’s practice focuses on connecting conservation, research, and community involvement to support the preservation and interpretation of Mozambique’s cultural heritage.
