CIMAM is deeply saddened by the passing of Rudi Fuchs (1942–2026), former CIMAM President (1993–1997) and an influential figure in the international modern and contemporary art museum community.

Throughout his distinguished career, Fuchs directed the Van Abbemuseum, the Haags Gemeentemuseum, and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and served as Artistic Director of Documenta 7 in 1982.

During his two terms as CIMAM President, he contributed to strengthening international dialogue and cooperation among museum professionals. CIMAM will always be grateful for his leadership and for the lasting mark he left on our organization, helping shape CIMAM into what it is today.

Fuchs’ contribution to CIMAM is also documented in Museums from the Inside, published to mark the organization's 60th anniversary. Featuring more than 20 interviews with influential figures in the international museum community, including Fuchs, the publication offers a firsthand perspective on six decades of transformations, debates, and challenges in modern and contemporary art museums.

CIMAM honors his legacy and his contribution to our international museum community.

Our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
