Extend Your Stay: Events and Activities Around the Conference

The Mosi oa Tunya Perennial

is an international contemporary art exhibition organised by the Livingstone Office for Contemporary Art (LoCA), taking place across Livingstone, Zambia, and Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, from September 2026 to March 2027. Centred on the theme “Smuggling as Resistance,” it reimagines the traditional art biennale through the concept of “perenniality” the continuous movement, adaptation and renewal of people, animals, resources and ideas across borders. By drawing on Southern Africa’s interconnected histories, cultural exchanges and traditions of community resistance, the exhibition seeks to create a sustainable, locally rooted model for international artistic collaboration that challenges conventional geographical and cultural boundaries

Can an international exhibition be structured according to the perennial animal corridors of our geographical region corridors that cross political borders and defy the regulatory systems imposed upon them?

This question has particular relevance to a conference titled Museums Beyond Limits: Imagining Repair Across Cultures, Ecologies and Knowledges, challenging political and institutional boundaries through shared ecologies, histories, and cultural knowledge. The Perennial is concerned precisely with what happens when artistic and institutional practices move beyond inherited national, disciplinary and administrative limits. It understands repair as an ongoing process grounded in relation, movement, return, collective learning and the circulation of knowledge.

Connecting Livingstone and Victoria Falls, it invites delegates to engage with an emerging artist-led initiative that embodies repair through movement, collaboration, and regional exchange. Formally launched on 12 September 2026, with its full exhibition opening on 14 January 2027, the Perennial provides an active platform for strengthening cross-border relationships and sustaining cultural dialogue beyond the conference.
