Museum At Risk

Save the Museum | Museum at Risk is a recently established collective of artists, curators, and professionals from the cultural sector, united in concern about a number of plans by the Flemish government, which they have made public through the concept note on the reform of museum institutions.

Their particular focus is on the closure of one of the two leading contemporary art museums in Flanders, namely the one in Antwerp. We are backed by a steering group of external experts and aim to build upon a 25-year tradition of constructive cooperation between the arts field and the government.

They advocate for the preservation of a fully-fledged Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp, with its own collection, appropriate infrastructure, and sustainable funding. Furthermore, they demand a right to consultation and co-decision for the sector in the reform of the Flemish museums. Knowledge is not only held by experts at the top but by practitioners on the ground – and we want to actively involve them.

These are therefore their positions:

  1. We want a Museum for Contemporary Art in Antwerp
  2. A Museum for Contemporary Art has a Collection
  3. A Museum of Contemporary Art of International Standing requires an appropriate Infrastructure and Funding
  4. We want Participation and Co-Decision Rights in the Reform of Flemish Museums
