VASIF KORTUN APPOINTED CURATOR OF UAE PAVILION AT 2011 VENICE BIENNALE
The United Arab Emirates has announced the participation of the UAE’s second National Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale in the summer of 2011, with Turkish writer and educator Vasif Kortun as the Pavilion’s curator.
Kortun, director of a new intra-disciplinary institution to open in 2011 in Istanbul, has been the founding director of several spaces including Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center (2001-2010), Proje4L Istanbul Museum of Contemporary Art (2001-2004), and the Museum of the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York (1993-1997). He was also chief curator of the Third and the co-curator of the Ninth Istanbul Biennials in 1992 and 2005, respectively, and has, in addition, co-curated Biennales in Taipei (2008), Sao Paolo (1998), Tirana (2003) and organized the Turkish Pavilion in Venice (2007), and 1994 and 1998 Sao Biennials. In 2006 he received the Ninth Annual Award for Curatorial Excellence given by the Center for Curatorial Studies.
