THE SOLOMON R. GUGGENHEIM FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL NETWORK SEEKS CURATOR
Curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation International Network
Reports to Deputy Director and Chief Curator and Chief Executive Officer for Global Strategies, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation
The Curator will work in close association with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s senior curatorial staff in order to develop an ambitious international program of exhibitions, educational programs and publications; build an art collection focused on postwar European and American art.
POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:
Exhibitions
Conceive and organize special exhibitions composed of loans from public and private collections or directly from artists’ studios. General responsibilities include composing checklists, negotiating loans, writing essays and related exhibition texts, and coordinating all exhibition details with other departments.
Coordinate special exhibitions organized by or with other institutions. Negotiate contracts with appropriate staff. Perform internal coordination of exhibitions including overseeing or approving installations.
Participate in exhibition programming and scheduling discussions with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum staff regarding programming at all affiliates. Communicate related issues between the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and affiliates.
Maintain oversight of exhibition catalogues and related published materials for the projects led by the curator.
Collection
Coordinate collection priorities with Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Identify works for acquisition of interest for the museums in the International Network. Prepare acquisition presentation materials for consideration. Cultivate collectors and solicit donations of works of art.
Conceive and organize special exhibitions and installations drawn from the permanent collection of the Guggenheim Museum network in close collaboration with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum staff.
Conduct research on the permanent collection to complement permanent collection installations or for museum publications.
Participate in inter-departmental decisions regarding collection activities to support collection loans, travel, research, storage, preservation, publication, and display.
Oversee collection publications, including the website and marketing materials.
Departmental
Work closely with the affiliates’ conservation, publications, and education staff on all matters relating to art, artists and exhibitions.
Contribute to the activities of the membership groups. Collaborate with institutional colleagues to develop programs, classes, lecture series, etc. for public and membership groups.
Give gallery talks, lectures, panel discussions and VIP tours in support of exhibitions, educational projects or as needed.
Support Development staff to identify and secure financial support for exhibition programs and operations, as needed.
Meet with and respond to questions from press and general public, as needed.
Manage general departmental mail and correspondence related to research requests from colleagues and the general public.
Represent curatorial department at local and international art exhibitions and events.
Build relationships with local art community.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Advanced degree in Art History or related field with concentration in 20th-century and/or contemporary art. A knowledge of pre 20th century and/or nonwestern cultures beneficial.
Minimum of 8 years of curatorial experience in 20th-century and/or contemporary art.
Proven knowledge of professional museum practices, including realization of loan and collection exhibitions; history of scholarship and publications related to modern or contemporary art; and experience in project fundraising, collection development and planning, and exhibition programming.
Experience working with Board of Trustees, museum membership groups and patron committees, managing senior and junior staff.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally, and to stay for long periods at the affiliates’ locations, as needed..
Verbal and written fluency in Spanish and English. A knowledge of Italian and German beneficial.
Proficiency with database software (The Museum System preferred) and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel) software
