NEW YORK GALLERIST TO LEAD MOCA: BOARD OF TRUSTEES NAMES JEFFREY DEITCH AS MUSEUM DIRECTOR
Following a worldwide search, the Board of Trustees of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), has announced the appointment of Jeffrey Deitch as the museum’s new director, effective June 1. MOCA has been without a director since Jeremy Strick resigned in the midst of the museum’s financial crisis.
Deitch is one of New York´s leading gallerists, specializing in modern and contemporary art, and he has a 30-year career as an independent curator who has produced innovative exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world.
According to the ‘Los Angeles Times’, Deitch will give up his New York City gallery, Deitch Projects, possibly transferring parts of the business to some of his current employees. “I’m just going to stop all commercial activity. The gallery will be over,” Deitch said, as will his work as an art consultant to collectors. He also will resign from the committee that rules on which works purported to be by Jean-Michel Basquiat are genuine.
The topic of an art dealer – versus someone from more traditional museum-world background – assuming a major museum directorship, has become a topic of discussion in the art community, with some seeing the potential for conflicts of interest.
