NEA 2008 SURVEY OF PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN THE ARTS SHOWS DECLINING ATTENDANCE IN ART EVENTS

The results of 2008 NEA´s Survey of Public Participation in the Arts, the largest periodic study of arts participation in the United States, are disappointing. While art participants are older than before - increasingly older than the average U.S. adult (45) - \\\\\\\'a smaller segment of the adult population either attended arts performances or visited art museums or galleries than in any prior survey.\\\\\\\'

The economic downturn that began in late 2007 is not the only factor at work. The report emphasizes large shifts in the American public´s relationship to the arts: \\\\\\\'since 1982, the share of 18-24-year-olds who report having had any music education in their lives - now 38 percent - has dropped by more than a third. For visual arts training, the proportion - now 21 percent - has nearly halved. Or another finding: that a gulf exists between the participation rates of certain geographic areas¡Xnotably the Northeastern and South Central states¡Xsuggesting regional disparities in access to arts opportunities.\\\\\\\'
