22.12.2009 WORKERS AT THE POMPIDOU CENTRE SUSPEND THEIR STRIKE OVER PLANNED STAFF REDUCTIONS, BUT DISPUTE IS STILL UNRESOLVED
Workers at the Pompidou Center in Paris have suspended a strike that had shuttered the museum since late November.
The action, which started at the Pompidou Centre but spread to other Parisian museums and cultural sites, was called to oppose planned staff reductions by the French government, fearing that more than two hundred jobs could be lost over the next decade.
The dispute is still unresolved, as French Culture Minister Frédéric Mitterrand vowed he would not make exceptions regarding the staffing cuts. Unions representing staff plan to resume their protest in January.
