NANCY SPERO DIES AT THE AGE OF 83
Nancy Spero (Ohio, Cleveland, 1926) was one of the most radical figures linked to feminist art. She began to develop her career within the New York anti-establishment scene of the 1960s by challenging the dominant aesthetic and ideological standards, focusing her effort on crafting a specifically feminine graphic language, and using her art to depict the political violence, social injustices and the atrocity of war conflicts.
Major exhibitions include Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain (2009); Museo d´Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain (2008); Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea, Santiago de Compostela, Spain (2004); MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts (1994); Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (1994); Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth, Australia (2004) Museum of Modern Art, New York (1992); and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1988). A Spero retrospective is planned for the Pompidou Center in Paris next year.
