MAYOR OF LONDON CALLS FOR VOLUNTARY MUSEUM ADMISSION FEES
Speaking on September 21 on an event to discuss the impact of the recession on the arts, Mayor Boris Johnson suggested that museums should begin charging voluntary entrance fees, saying that it could help raise money for institutions and increase visitors’ appreciation of what they see, reports Stephen Adams for The Telegraph.
Britain’s Labour Party removed museum fees on 1 Dec. 2001 in an effort to boost attendance, with visitor numbers rising by 70 per cent. Compared to US institutions where a system of \\\"recommended\\\" or \\\"suggested\\\" fees is used, British institutions take a softer approach, with visitors encouraged to donate in \\\"honesty boxes\\\" placed near entrances.
