IN SUPPORT OF THE WIELS CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART IN BRUSSELS
Letter addressed to the Prime Minister Yves Leterme, Deputy Prime Minister Laurette Onkelinx, and Charles Picqué, Minister-President of Brussels Capital Region expressing CIMAM´s deep concern about the alarming news that Wiels Centre for Contemporary Art in Brussels, should be forced to close its doors due to the impossibility to receive the remaining part of the subsidies for the renovation of its building.
Dear Prime Minister Yves Leterme,
Dear Deputy Prime Minister Laurette Onkelinx,
Dear Charles Picqué, Minister-President of Brussels Capital Region,
CIMAM would like to express its deepest concern about the alarming news that Wiels Centre for Contemporary Art in Brussels, should be forced to close its doors due to the impossibility to receive the remaining part of the subsidies for the renovation of its building.
As colleague institutions from neighbouring countries, we have been able to get to know about Wiels since its opening in 2007 and the steady unfolding of its activities. After several decades, Brussels has finally obtained the international institution for contemporary art, which represents the position and importance of Brussels as a city of culture and arts in the present. The international profile and quality of Wiels exhibitions and exceptional building have resulted in an institution that can live up to the reputation and ambition of Brussels as the administrative capital of Europe.
The program of Wiels through solo and group exhibitions by national and international artists, the lectures, publications, educational activities, and an international residency for artists, achieved thanks to the support of various Belgian governments, and contributions from artists and sponsors, have made Wiels a valuable partner institution in Belgium and Brussels.
The renovation of the former brewery has also erased the memory of the former derelict wasteland and proven the possibility to improve the quality of urban existence through the attractiveness of cultural institutions. The current activities function as a catalyst for the whole district and attracts visitors from Brussels, Belgium, and internationally.
We, as concerned collegue institutions, would like to request firmly that a solution for the administrative impasse in which this valuable fellow institution is finding itself, is found quickly.
Yours sincerely,
CIMAM - International Committee of ICOM for Museums and Collections of Modern and Contemporary Art
